Tuolumne County Sheriff & President

David Vasquez - Sheriff

Mother’s Day Weekend is upon us, and it feels like spring. This is a time to celebrate new beginnings and our rich history. Every year our community comes together for this time-honored tradition of the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Posse’s Mother Lode Round-Up, in historic Tuolumne County.

The Mother Lode Round-Up kicks off with the Round-Up parade followed by two days of rodeo events from mutton busting to bull riding and everything in between. This is an exciting weekend the whole family can saddle up for, a true Tuolumne County tradition!

There is no greater feeling than the opening ceremony when Old Glory is thundering through the arena and our community stands together, united, to honor our American tradition of freedom and liberty. From the first note to the last note of our National Anthem, I am constantly reminded that freedom is not free and how grateful I am to belong to this community and serve as your sheriff; a sheriff for the people of Tuolumne County!

The Mother Lode Round-Up experience is made possible by the support of our beloved community, from our local businesses and tribal partners to all invested organizations. My sincerest gratitude to the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Posse for organizing, sponsoring, and ensuring our Round-Up tradition carries on. In addition to facilitating the Round-Up, the Sheriff’s Posse invests in our local youth by providing scholarships to high school students and our rodeo queen contestants. I am proud of the Sheriff’s Posse and honored to serve with them.

This year will mark my second Mother Lode Round-Up as your sheriff and I remain faithful to our shared vision of preserving the Round-Up tradition; it is an honor to serve Tuolumne County. I am especially grateful for my staff, the deputies, and support staff of the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office. Our dedication and actions are guided by the continuous support we receive from our shared community.
We are honored to serve and be with you for this year’s 67th Annual Round-Up!

Respectfully,
David L. Vasquez
Sheriff-Coroner

Steve Valente

Steve Valente

Steve Valente comes from a deep, multi-generational background in agriculture, with experience and influence ranging from California’s Central Valley to Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and ultimately Tuolumne County. His lifelong work in agriculture reflects both a broad geographic reach and a deep respect for regional farming traditions.

Specializing in bovine genetics, Steve has dedicated his career to improving livestock through intentional breeding, stewardship, and sound agricultural practices. His passion extends beyond the herd to the education and mentorship of the younger generation, where he works to pass on agricultural knowledge, skills, and values essential to the future of farming and ranching.

Steve has been married to his wife for 32 years, and together they have raised a strong, faith-centered family. He is a proud father to Kendra, Lena, Cara, Mia, Justus, and Josephine, and a devoted grandfather to five grandchildren, all of whom bring him great joy.

Above all, Steve’s life is guided by his love for the Lord, shaping his integrity, leadership, and commitment to family, agriculture, and community.

In closing, Steve would like to extend his sincere thanks to the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Posse for allowing him the honor of serving this year, and to the Mother Lode Fairgrounds for graciously hosting this event year after year. He is deeply grateful to the community for coming out to support the rodeo, and he offers a special thank you to all mothers—wishing each of you a happy and blessed Mother’s Day.

Roger Canepa

Roger Canepa

Roger B. Canepa was born on July 17, 1963, and raised in Sonora, California, the son of the late William and Carole Canepa. He attended Curtis Creek Elementary and Sonora High School before continuing his education at Butte Junior College and Chico State College.

Roger is the middle of three siblings: his older brother Ricky, himself, and his younger sister Shelly. All three have dedicated years to coaching and are members of the Sonora High School Hall of Fame. Roger devoted over 40 years to coaching high school football at Sonora High, Calaveras High, and Central Catholic High Schools, becoming the all-time winningest coach in the Sac-Joaquin Section with 295 wins. He earned induction into the Butte Junior College Football Hall of Fame and received the prestigious Wildcat Award from Chico State football. He was also honored by the California Coaches Association, which honors elite high school coaches for their career achievements and dedication to California Athletics. Roger is known for pushing his players to be their best on and off the field, and his influence extends far beyond the scoreboard.

Family has always been central to Roger’s life. He has played a guiding role in raising his daughters, Ali Lewis and Alexis Carsner, and is a proud grandfather to Tate and Tillie Lewis, and Everly and Elaina Carsner. Roger co-owns Canepa & Sons Well Drilling with his brother Ricky and is one of the owners of The Sportsman in downtown Sonora, along with Ricky and his college roommate and dear friend, Jon Zombic. His hobbies include golf, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and doing the YMCA dance, which he is famous for!

If you asked people to describe Roger, they would say he is loyal, funny, and VERY generous—a man whose dedication, leadership, and heart have left a lasting mark on his family, players, and community.

Audie Archer

Audie Archer

The Grand Marshall

Audie Archer was born in Castro Valley, California on July 9, 1957. He attended elementary school in Valley Home, CA, and later went to Oakdale High School. Growing up, Audie spent his summers working at his family stables that were located in Mi-Wuk Village and Strawberry. He stayed busy competing in jackpot rodeos at the Hacienda Rodeo Grounds, La Grange, Ca which was operated by his Dad, Ken Archer, and Ray Norton. When he wasn’t competing in the rodeos you could find him either behind the shoots or in the arena working as a pick-up man. After a day of rodeo you could find him at the Oakie Stomp in Columbia, dancing up a storm, and often arriving in his 1968 GTO. After high school, Audie worked at Texas Meat in Milton, where he stayed in the bunkhouse. In 1978, he began his trucking career, and soon after, he met his future wife, Sandy. Together they built a beautiful family including all their children Cindy, Ricky, Joey, Shawnda, Amber, and Alisha. They are proud of their growing legacy of 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Audie and Sandy lived in Oakdale during their early years before moving to Twain Harte in 1989. In 2002, Audie started Archer Trucking alongside his son, Joey, allowing him to stay closer to family while continuing the work he loves. Audie still operates Archer Trucking today. He also worked winters doing snow removal for Caltrans for 14 years, and has since retired from Caltrans. During fire season, he still transports equipment for Cal Fire and for Forestry contractors as hired equipment. Many of you may have seen him driving his bright yellow Peterbilt in the morning hauling an end dump full of rock, and then that same afternoon hauling cows to the mountains for the ranchers. If you

ask Audie whether he plans on retiring any time soon, he will tell you he doesn’t have it in him.

Audie has always been deeply involved in the local western community. He spent many years packing and working at Kennedy Meadows with Willie Ritts. He is a past member of the Twain Harte Horsemen. In 2001 he helped establish the Wildcat Wranglers at Sonora High School. Over the years Audie has organized many Junior Rodeo playdays for our local youth. Every year you can find him at the Mother Lode Fair Livestock Auction as a ring man jumping on chairs to see over the crowd to acknowledge bids during the auction. He loves helping our local youth get their animals sold. Since 1999, he has been a proud member of the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Posse. Audie continues to serve as Queen Chairman, alongside his wife, Sandy. He remains an active member of the Rodeo Committee. In 2007 he served as Captain of the Sheriff’s Posse. Most recently, Audie served as General Chairman from 2019–2024.

You may have recently seen Audie hauling our local Sonora High Wildcats football team on his lowboy trailer during the celebration parade in December, honoring their back-to-back state championship title.

Audie has one of the biggest hearts you will ever meet. He truly loves spending time with his family and is always the first one to show up and help—no matter the time, the place, or the situation. Audie has a deep love for God, and it shows in the way he lives his life with a servant’s heart. He gives quietly, works hard, and never hesitates to lend a hand to anyone in need. His kindness, generosity, and willingness to serve others are a true reflection of who he is. He truly has never met a stranger.

Audie is honored to serve as the 2026 Grand Marshal for the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Posse and wishes a Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. He welcomes everyone to the Mother Lode Round-Up Parade and Rodeo.
